...and to present the results with all of the best known (and as such slightly dull) films weeded out, I offer the following alternatives.
This first list shows The 50 Greatest Films excluding any film that has been rated more than 2500 times at the IMDb (a fairly reliable indicator of the Zeitgeist,) thus giving us a list of some the lesser known (at least with regards to the public) but still critically acclaimed works. 50 Films (2500 maximum)
The next three lists employ a formula that gives a weighted result which, theoretically at least, should level the playing field. Again using the IMDb, I have taken the number of times that a film has been rated by IMDbers and divided that number by the number of votes that it has received here - number of IMDb votes ÷ number of 50 Greatest Films votes = weighted vote.
For the first list, films must have received art least 20 votes: Weighted list (20 votes minimum)
For the second list, films must have received art least 10 votes: Weighted list (10 votes minimum)
And for the final list, films need only to have received a minimum of 5 votes: Weighted list (5 votes minimum)
